Fast Grilled Tofu Steaks (Vegan, 15 Min)

Grilled tofu is a legitimate main course, not a consolation for vegetarians. The trick is the press-and-marinate-and-brush sequence. Pressed tofu develops a dense, meaty texture; a two-stage marinade (soak and brush) builds flavor on both the interior and the glazed exterior. A basic electric grill like the Weber Q1400 does this recipe beautifully, you do not need high-end heat for tofu.
Ingredients
- 1 block extra-firm tofu (14 oz), pressed
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, grated
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tbsp neutral oil for the grill
- Scallions and sesame seeds
Instructions
- 01
Press the tofu between paper towels with something heavy on top for 10 minutes while you preheat the grill. This step is the single difference between great grilled tofu and sad, floppy tofu.
- 02
Slice the pressed tofu into 4 slabs.
- 03
Whisk soy sauce, maple, sesame oil, vinegar, garlic, and paprika. Brush over both sides of the tofu.
- 04
Preheat the grill to 425F and oil the grates.
- 05
Grill tofu 4 minutes per side, brushing with more marinade each time you flip.
- 06
Serve with extra sauce, scallions, and sesame seeds.
Pro Tips
From our kitchen
- ★Extra-firm only. Silken and medium tofu fall apart on a grill.
- ★Press hard and for at least 10 minutes. Every gram of water you remove is a gram of sauce the tofu can absorb.
